THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME

Hard Magic is a constantly changing and evolving virtual collective of like-minded musicians, voices, and musical styles
People occasionally ask me where the name Hard Magic came from.
The answer is actually a blend of my personal history and my musical influences.
My father was a magician, so the idea of magic has always had a special place in my life. Years later, I discovered the song “Hard Magic,” (watch music video here) by Divine, and I always thought it was a fantastic song. Long before I adopted the name, I’d imagined recording my own version someday.
There’s another coincidence that’s always stayed with me. Divine passed away on my twentieth birthday in 1988. I didn’t know it at the time, of course, but years later that connection became one more thread in the story.
When it came time to re-imagine my Amphabian catalog, I wanted a name that represented transformation rather than replacement. “Hard Magic” felt exactly right. To me, it represents the idea that real transformation isn’t an illusion. It takes work. It takes honesty. It takes time. That’s the kind of magic that changes people, and that’s the spirit I wanted to bring to this new chapter of my music.
